Gas Valves: From 'Manual Switch' to 'Smart Safety Control' — Micro Motors Safeguard Gas Safety

2026-08-30

In devices like gas meters and emergency gas shut-off valves, miniature DC gear motors are playing an increasingly important role as 'safety guards.' They transform traditional mechanical valves into smart terminals that can be remotely controlled and automatically shut off, acting as key units for ensuring gas usage safety and enabling smart gas IoT.

Industry Pain Points: Slow Response, High Safety Risks

Traditional gas valves rely on manual operation, which means they cannot quickly cut off the gas supply automatically in emergencies like gas leaks, posing serious safety hazards. Ordinary electric valves also face issues such as high power consumption, insufficient torque, and poor reliability in complex environments, making it difficult to meet the strict requirements for smart gas meters: long lifespan, low power consumption, and explosion-proof features.

Miniature DC Gear Motor Solutions

Smart gas valves place special demands on their core power source — the miniature DC gear motor — requiring it to be small, high-torque, ultra-low power, and self-locking. The motor uses a reduction gear system to drive a rack-and-pinion or sliding screw mechanism, converting rotational motion into linear motion to precisely control the opening and closing of the valve disk or core. To meet long-term standby needs for gas meters, the motor design must be low-power and compatible with battery supply. Additionally, the motor drive circuit needs torque-limiting mechanics to restrict torque when the valve is fully open or closed, reducing power consumption and protecting the motor.

Typical Application Cases

Several patented technologies showcase innovative uses of micro motors in gas valves. For example, a Bluetooth-controlled electric gas valve system includes a controller with a microcontroller, Bluetooth module, leak detection circuit, and motor drive circuit. Commands sent via smartphone or remote control are received by the microcontroller, which controls motor rotation. A reducer increases torque to drive the valve stem, enabling remote valve operation. To enhance reliability, some built-in motor valve designs use complex gear reduction components (like first and second gears with speed adjustment) for precise transmission and sealed structures to ensure the valve remains sealed under conditions like negative pressure.

Additional Details

For industrial and outdoor applications, motor performance requirements are even stricter. Motors used in gas ball valves must be waterproof and explosion-proof, and connect to the switch controller via aviation plugs for quick replacement. To address issues like valves sticking due to sediment, some solutions use high reduction ratio worm gear motors (such as the TJW56FA model, up to 1:2000) to provide extremely high torque to overcome resistance. Currently, China has a growing number of companies specializing in miniature motor R&D and manufacturing. Their products are widely used in smart gas meters, smart water valves, and have been recognized as 'Little Giant' small and specialized innovative enterprises, continuously driving industry technology upgrades.
